4 tips when eating out
We all love to eat out from time to time, don’t we?
However, eating out can be a daunting task, especially when you are trying your best to live a healthy lifestyle. The good news is that, as more people are becoming health conscious restaurants are now starting to include healthier choices in their meals. In this blog post, I am going to share tips that use when planning to eat out, I hope they will be beneficial for you and help you make better health decisions when you are out in the real world.
Check menus ahead of time
Do your homework before you leave the house, trust me, this will save you from disappointments. If you want to live a healthier lifestyle, it means you have to go the extra mile to make sure that your decision for choosing a healthful life does not fail.
Most restaurants now upload their menus on their websites to allow you to access them at any time. If you have a restaurant that you want to go to, take a look at their menu before you visit so that you have time to make a careful decision that fits your lifestyle. If the menu has nothing that suits you, you can also call them ahead of time and ask if the restaurant can prepare a special dish for you. Most restaurants will accommodate such requests if you call them in advance. I personally have done this many times before and most restaurants certainly do not mind, because they know that some people either have food allergies, sensitivities or are on some special type of diet. In fact, most chefs see it as an inspiring challenge when they receive such requests.
If the restaurant is not willing to work with you then maybe choose another restaurant, preferably one that will fit your diet requirements, for example, it is easier to order a low-fat meal in an Indian restaurant than it is in a steakhouse.
Look out for healthier choices on the menu
When looking at the menu pay attention to words and the language in order to bypass nutritional pitfalls like excessive salt or sugar, insufficient fibre or too much fat. Always look out for dishes that are loaded with vegetables because that is where most of the vitamins and minerals are.
Make use of waiters and chefs
Most restaurants now list “healthy choice” or “low fat” dishes on their menu, however, these labels may be unclear to you. If you are not sure or are unclear about what these options offer to make use of the waiters and chefs, they should be ready to answer any questions you have concerning your order.
Avoid overeating
I know how it feels, especially when the food taste so good in your mouth and your brain is sending you signals to stop eating but you continue because the food is just amazing.
Most time it’s not our fault and this is because most restaurants serve large positions of food which we may feel the need to finish especially when we have paid so much for it; however, don’t feel compelled to clean your plate, instead ask one of the waiters to take the leftovers home with you. Overeating is not good for our health in the long run as it can cause digestive issues. To avoid this, pass up the fixed price menu or select two or three items from the starter section. If you want to go for a dessert, go for something smaller or share it with your companions.
