Baobab Fruit Drink
This baobab fruit drink with passion fruit is tangy, refreshing, and full of health benefits — rich in vitamin C, fibre, and antioxidants. A simple, nourishing mocktail or cocktail base.
The baobab fruit has always fascinated me. Unlike any other fruit, there’s no juicy flesh or bite into it, you crack it open, and inside is powder, dry and chalky, yet alive with tang. To me, that has always felt like a little miracle.
When family friends blessed me with a basket of baobab fruits, my heart swelled. They gifted me a piece of home, of afternoons in the village with cousins, of the love and warmth that still binds me to my family across oceans. For someone living far away, having these fruits in my kitchen feel like holding onto the land itself.
The baobab fruit is mighty and resilient . If stored well, the baobab fruit pulp keeps for years, defying time in its quiet resilience. To me, that longevity mirrors what it represents endurance, strength, heritage. And from that strength comes joy: the chance to turn it into something new.
This refreshing baobab drink feels like a toast to the past and a promise for the future. With its tangy brightness mellowed by the sweetness of passion fruit, each sip is heritage poured into a glass.
Quick Answer: What Is Baobab?
The baobab tree has always been more than a tree; its a living monument, a keeper of stories. With its wide trunk and branches that stretch like roots into the sky, it stands as the Tree of Life. For centuries, it has sheltered families, fed communities, and anchored villages in both body and spirit.
Across Africa, baobab fruit has been mixes with water or milk; it has quenched thirst on hot days, nourished children after school, and brought families together under the shade of the tree itself.
From this ancient tree comes its most treasured gift: the baobab fruit. Hard-shelled on the outside, chalky and tangy within, the fruit holds a powder-like pulp that seems almost magical. In my homeland of Venda, we called it mbuyu. What do you call it in your language or country?
From this fruit, a simple but refreshing drink is born: baobab fruit drink made by soaking the fruit pulp (or using baobab powder) in water, then straining and sweetening it. Refreshing, citrusy, and nourishing.
Today, the world is beginning to notice what our elders always knew: baobab is not just delicious, it is powerful. From its vitamin C to its fibre, from its antioxidants to its minerals, the benefits of baobab are many. I’ve written about this more deeply in this post on the 7 Powerful Benefits of Baobab Fruit Powder, but here in a simple glass of baobab juice, you can already taste that strength.

Equipment
- Jug or pitcher (for mixing the baobab powder with water or almond milk)
- Whisk or spoon (to dissolve the powdered baobab)
- Measuring spoons and cups
- Serving glasses
- Spoon (for scooping passion fruit pulp)
- Knife and cutting board (to cut passion fruits)
- Ice cube tray (optional, for freezing baobab–mint ice cubes)
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp baobab powder
- 2 cups cold water
- 2 tbsp simple syrup or castor sugar
- Ice cubes
- fresh mint leaves for garnish
- 2 passion fruit pulp scooped out
Instructions
- In a jug, whisk the baobab powder into 2 cups of cold water until smooth and slightly creamy.
- In serving glasses, add ice cubes and divide the passion fruit pulp between them.
- Pour the prepared baobab mixture over the passion fruit. Stir in syrup or sweetener to taste.
- Garnish with mint leaves and enjoy immediately.
Notes
- Ice Tip: Freeze baobab juice with passion fruit and mint in ice cube trays for baobab ice cubes, they’ll keep your drink chilled without watering down the flavour.
- Using fresh baobab fruit instead: If you have access to whole baobab fruit and seeds, crack it open and soak the baobab pulp in lukewarm water until dissolved (about 30 minutes or overnight). Strain, then continue the recipe from (no.2) as above.
- Storage Tip: Store leftover baobab drink in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to 2 days. Stir before serving, as the drink may separate.
- Mocktail or Cocktail: This drink makes a perfect summer mocktail served with soda water or sparkling water. For a cocktail, add a splash of gin, rum, or vodka for a refreshing adult twist.
- Taste: Expect a tangy and citrusy flavour balanced with sweetness: zesty, uplifting, and naturally cooling.
