Easy Vegan Apple Crumble
A delightful and comforting vegan apple crumble made with fresh apples, dates, a splash of maple syrup, and organic rolled oatmeal.
Apples; While in high school, I never went more than a day without at least munching on one of these crisp, juicy delights, so it’s no surprise that apples are the fruit that most strongly brings back memories of those years. These days, I find them most delicious when baked into a vegan apple crumble.
The benefit of making your own apple crumble at home is that you know precisely what components are in your dessert, it’s fresh, and you can make a healthier version using less sugar and other ingredients. This vegan apple crumble recipe is just that. There are no artificial ingredients, no preservatives, and no added sugar.
I love this recipe because it combines a lot of things that I love: fresh apples, dates, maple syrup, and oatmeal.
And there you have it — vegan apple crumble!
This apple crumble is:
- Completely vegan
- Refined sugar-free
- Gluten-free
- & super yummy!
Here’s what you’ll need
Large apples: I used sweet-tart Royal Gala apples – Other types like Granny Smiths, Bramley or Pink Lady apples will work just as well.
Organic Rolled oats: I use gluten-free jumbo oatmeal – I like my crumble topping thickly layered for an extra crunch.
Medjool Dates: These dark, sticky fruits are a perfect way to sweeten the apple crumbles without adding too much-processed sugar.
100% Ceylon Cinnamon: This type is harvested from the bark of evergreen trees from Sri Lanka. It is also referred to as “true” cinnamon as it has more antioxidants and comes from a plant compared to cassia cinnamon. You can find this on Amazon or most health stores.
Mixed Spice: I love seasonings, and this one worked as an excuse to add more flavour to the vegan apple crumble. You can find this at most supermarkets in the spice aisle.
Nutmeg: I used this one to add in a warm, nutty flavour to the crumble.
Maple syrup: To enhance the sweetness of the apples and the dates.
Lemon juice: To heighten the dish’s natural tangy taste.
Coconut oil: To keep the crumble topping from getting too dry and burning.
